What is a Production Mix?

Sometimes you reach a point with your song where you've worked on it for so long that you lose all perspective. Perhaps you've tried to mix it down yourself several times - perhaps you've even hired several different Pro Mixers to mix it. You know you've got something special, but you just can't get it over the line,and it needs a fresh approach.

This is where a production mix comes in - perhaps the track needs some selective surgery. Maybe considerable editing is required to make that kick and bass guitar really hit. Maybe some of your ideas could be re-enforced by doubling on another instrument. Perhaps that piano line might sound better on a Rhodes? Emphasize dynamics with additional instrumentation in some places, while making the arrangement it sparser elsewhere. Sometimes subtle percussion can fix the tonal balance.
